Facts about France and the French culture

  • Ce qui est aujourd'hui appelé 'Le guide des vins de France' fut publié dès 1530 par l'imprimeur: Charles Estienne. Ecrit en latin, il fut le premier à recenser et à décrire l'ensemble des vins français.

What is now known  as ' The guide to the wines of France' was first published as early as 1530 by the printer: Charles Estienne. Written in Latin, it was the first guide to list and describe all the French wines.

 

  • La Fayette (marquis de) fit ajouter la couleur blanche au drapeau francais, aujourd'hui appelé 'Le tricolore'. (18e siècle)

La Fayette (Marquis of) added the color white to the French flag, now called 'Le tricolore'. (18th century).

Noël - Christmas

  • Le nougat 'noir', plus rare et meilleur au dire des spécilalistes, se fabrique à Noël et fait partie des treize desserts du 'gros souper' provençal.(tradition)

The 'black' nougat, rarer and of better quality according to the specialists, is made during the Christmas period and is part of the thirteen desserts served at 'the large supper' in Provence. (tradition)

  • Le carnet du Monde annonçait le 3 Fevrier 1973: 'M. et Mme Robert JOYEUX sont heureux de faire part de la naisssance de leur fils NOËL.'

The social column in Le Monde newspaper presented the following on 3rd February 1973: 'Mr and Mrs MERRY are happy to announce the birth of their son CHRISTMAS.'
